Zed = the letter Z (more in Europe, I think) Zulu = the letter Z (in NATO and ICAO phonetic alphabet) Zee = the letter Z (more in US, I think) Zero = the number zero I personally have never confused the letter Z and the number 0 (a zero). Phonetically or otherwise.
The pronounciaton "zed" is closer to the root word "zeta" because it uses the first three sounds z-e-t although the pronounciation of the last letter has changed over time, so now it is closer to a "d" sound. The "zee" pronounciation is slightly more removed.
The Dutch also pronounce the z as zed if we say it as a single letter. In a word itself it depends on the word of course. And pronouncing Y as ypsilon is boss. The real question is why do people from the USA pronounce English words wrong ;) as this post shows most of us (I'm English ) use 'zed' not 'zee'. Because Zed is correct.
Ian replies: As usual in most of these matters, it’s we the people of the US that changed it, not the other way around. “Zed” comes from the original Greek zeta via Old French zede, and pretty much all English speakers worldwide pronounce it that way. Yeah I've caught that in the past, but never knew enough of the language to pick up on any difference there, which I'm assuming is the zed variation equivalent. Oddly I'd use them both interchangeably when talking about either
I know nothing. "It's not just the British that pronounce “z” as “zed”. The vast majority of the English speaking world does this. The primary exception, of course, is in the United States where “z” is pronounced “zee”. The British and others pronounce “z”, “zed”, owing to the origin of the letter “z”, the Greek
Nov 26, 2019 · Much of our modern alphabet comes directly from the Greek alphabet, including a letter, that looked just like our “Z,” that the Greeks called “zeta.” “Zeta” evolved into the French “zede,” which
Z is just the keychain. The guy's name was Zed. We know this from when the shop owner calls Zed up, asks for Zed by name, and tell him that "Spider caught a couple of flies." He later admonishes Butch that "Nobody kills anybody in my place of business except me or Zed." The motorcycle's name was Grace.
